What Chelsea’s owners have done to feel they’ve put themselves in a strong position

According to a report today, Chelsea’s owners have done something that makes them feel they have put themselves in a strong position moving forward, since taking charge of the football club.

A lot has been said about certain players at the club and some who could be sold. In fact, it doesn’t look like there are many players in that squad right now who they would not be open to at least hearing offers for, as long as said player has an amortised transfer fee and can be sold for profit at this point in time.

The Athletic have an article out today which is really all about Armando Broja and how badly the club want to sell him right now. So bad in fact that they have briefed the press with this information to encourage buyers this month!

But this is all part of their plan to make profit, according to the report.

They say that in the absence of a shiny new stadium or stratospheric commercial growth, the Clearlake business model relies upon being able to sell players to meet salary demands and create accountancy room for new signings.

Chelsea’s owners feel they have put themselves in a strong position to do exactly that, by assembling a squad consisting largely of promising young footballers on reasonable salaries relative to the market and unusually long contracts that (theoretically) preserve significant resale value. They also have the benefit of a renowned academy at Cobham that produces a steady stream of, at the very least, sellable home-grown talent.
