Sheffield United needed three points on Saturday to avoid relegation from the English Premier League and unfortunately the Blades’ trip to St. James Park turned out like many of their other performances this season.
Chris Wilder’s men lost 5-1 to the host Magpies, officially confirmed their relegation to England’s second-tier for next season. U.S. men’s national team defender Auston Trusty played 90 minutes in the defeat.
Despite a fifth-minute opening goal for Sheffield United, the Magpies would rally back and tie the match in the 21st minute. Alexander Isak tied the match before Newcastle United kept its foot on the gas in the second half.
Bruno Guimaraes made it 2-1 in the 54th minute before Isak’s penalty-kick finish seven minutes later made it 3-1.
A Ben Osborn own goal paired with Callum Wilson’s eighth league goal of the season capped the final score at 5-1. Sheffield United has three matches remaining on its schedule, but sit 10 points from safety.
Trusty, who made the summer from Arsenal last summer, has made 31 combined appearances this season for the Blades. The 25-year-old could very well be on the move this summer after suffering relegation, especially after being one of the consistent performers in the squad.
