Liverpool plan ‘talks’ over Mo Salah future amid speculation

Liverpool will not only seek to hold onto Mo Salah this summer, but extend his deal at the club.

Speculation over his future at Anfield has increased of late, particularly following his touchline spat with Jurgen Klopp on Sunday.

However, reports claim that the Reds do not plan on letting the Egyptian winger leave the Merseyside outfit in the forthcoming transfer window.

Rather, Liverpool are “keen to negotiate a new contract” with Salah, according to The Times.

The 31-year-old’s contract expires in 2025, leading many commentators to suggest the club will cash in on their star player.

Last year Salah attracted interested from Saudi Pro League club Al-Ittihad, who saw a transfer bid worth up to £150 million rejected.

If Liverpool could receive a sizeable fee for a player who is not getting any younger, that could help fund new signings as Aren Slot prepares to take over from Jurgen Klopp at the end of the season.

However, the club’s hierarchy “expect” Salah to be at Liverpool next season and want the player to have an “important role” in the post-Klopp era.

It is also said that “there is little belief that the player wants to move there at this stage of his career”.

Richard Hughes, the club’s new sporting director, will be the one leading talks on a fresh deal for the former Chelsea attacker.

Salah has scored 29 goals in 49 appearances for club and country this season, but has struggled with injury more than in any previous season at Anfield.

With his form dipping in the second half of the season, he has found himself on the bench more often, leading to a heated row with the manager at the weekend.

Salah seemingly took offence to something Klopp said while he was waiting to be subbed on in the closing stages of Sunday’s 2-2 draw with West Ham, gesticulating at the German.

Michael Edwards, the mastermind behind signing Salah in 2017, has returned to Liverpool as FSG’s CEO of Football. It seems evident he and the club wish to quell any fears over Salah’s future at Anfield.
