Josh Sargent, Norwich City hammered by Leeds United in forgettable playoff loss

Josh Sargent and Norwich City endured a forgettable end to the EFL Championship season Thursday night.

The Canaries saw their promotion hopes end at Elland Road after losing 4-0 to Leeds United in their second leg semifinal tie. Sargent started the match for the visitors but was substituted off at halftime, watching the final 45 minutes from the sidelines.

Ilia Gruev propelled the Lilywhites in front after only seven minutes before Leeds United added two additional tallies before halftime. Joel Piroe doubled the hosts lead only 13 minutes later before Georginio Rutter made it 3-0 before the interval.

Sargent registered one shot on target in his performance, but the Canaries were held in check for most of the match.

Crysencio Summerville extended Leeds United’s lead to 4-0 in the 68th minute, giving Daniel Farke’s squad a lead they wouldn’t relinquish in West Yorkshire.

Leeds United advanced to May 26th’s playoff final at Wembley Stadium, where they will meet either Southampton or West Bromwich Albion.

Sargent, who finished the campaign as Norwich City’s leading goalscorer, could be on the move this summer after failing to head back to the Premier League. The U.S. men’s national team forward tallied 16 goals in EFL Championship play, which marked his second-straight season with double-digit tallies.
