The midfielder has left Girona

Aleix Garcia has been talking about his decision to leave Girona and move to Bayern Leverkusen this summer.

The midfielder was targeted by Barcelona at one point but has opted for a new challenge in the Bundesliga.

Garcia says that Barcelona were interested but adds that he never spoke to Xavi and Girona did not receive an offer from the Catalans.

“It was a very complicated decision. Five minutes before saying I was leaving I was talking to Míchel because my priority was to continue, but sometimes things don’t go the way you want,” he told RAC1.

“I had calls from different teams, but I always told my agent not to forget about Girona and to try to stay until the end, because it is a very nice season and I wanted to continue.

“As far as I know, FC Barcelona was only interested, there were calls, but I think there was no official offer. I never spoke with Xavi, Girona was the priority for me.”

Garcia’s departure will be a blow for Girona, but he thinks it’s a deal that works for all, with Leverkusen paying around €20m for the Spain star.

“It is positive for everyone. For Girona, receiving these amounts is important for next season and their future. We are all happy,” he added.

“I am convinced of the decision. I have had better financial options but the Champions League was the objective. It cannot be with Girona, but it can be with Leverkusen.”

Leverkusen have moved to strengthen their squad after a season where they beat Bayern Munich to the league title, won the German Cup and made it to the final of the Europa League.
