Hansi Flick wants more options

Barcelona are targeting a move for young Brazilian defender Esquerdinha after Hansi Flick requested a full-back who can play on both flanks.

The new Barcelona boss thinks it’s key he has another full-back, particularly with doubts continuing over Joao Cancelo’s future at the club.

Diario Sport are reporting that Barca like the look of the 20-year-old Fluminense defender who would be a low-cost option for the club.

Barcelona are said to have been scouting Esquerdinha (full name: João Henrique Mendes) for some time and could step up their interest.

Esquerdinha is described as being an attacking full-back, known for his set-piece ability, speed, versatility and competitive spirit.

Barca’s plan would be to initially sign the youngster for Rafa Marquez’s reserve side, with a view to promoting him to the first team quickly if he can impress.

Esquerdinha is contracted to Fluminense until 2026, although the report adds he has a termination clause of 70 million euros - which will surely be a problem for Barca.
