Mexico – Panama headlines This Weekend’s Soccer on TV

The 2023 Concacaf Gold Cup comes to a conclusion on Sunday when Mexico and Panama go head-to-head to lift the tournament trophy.

Panama defeated the defending Gold Cup Champions in dramatic fashion on Wednesday, topping the USMNT 5-4 in a penalty shootout. Thomas Christiansen’s squad took the lead in the 99th minute, but the USMNT answered back with a Jesus Ferreira goal just six minutes later.

Orlando Mosquera’s key penalty stop on Cristian Roldan helped ice the victory ahead of Adalberto Carrasquilla’s clinching finish.

The Panamanians face a stern test though with Mexico opposing them in Sunday’s Final from Las Vegas. El Tri will look to amend their 2021 heartbreak and lift the Gold Cup for the ninth time in history.

A confident 3-0 semifinal victory over Jamaica on Wednesday should have El Tri feeling fresh and ready to go.

Major League Soccer continues with a trio of matches making SBI’s top 5 this week. In the Eastern Conference, first meets third when FC Cincinnati hosts Nashville SC at TQL Stadium.

Pat Noonan’s squad claimed three points Wednesday in a comeback 2-1 victory over the New York Red Bulls while Nashville SC fell 2-0 at home to the Philadelphia Union. Nashville SC seeks revenge after losing at home to FCC earlier this season.

Action continues in the East when the Philadelphia Union take on I-95 rivals New York City FC. The Union swept NYCFC last season, winning all three matchups including a 3-1 Eastern Conference Final result at Subaru Park.

Julian Carranza leads his side with 10 goals while Daniel Gazdag has registered nine assists and seven goals thus far. Despite NYCFC’s recent struggles in league play, Saturday’s match presents Nick Cushing’s squad with a major opportunity to get back on track against a top opponent.

Atlanta United and Orlando City SC cap the weekend off with a top-table battle. The Five Stripes are only one point ahead of the Lions coming into their head-to-head clash and will look to widen the gap between the two. The two sides split points in a 1-1 draw at Exploria Stadium earlier this year.
