Final day sees 23/24 League One promotion, relegation and playoffs confirmed

Coming into the last set of games, we knew Derby’s promotion to the Championship would be secured with a win or draw against Carlisle.

Additionally, they would secure a top-two finish if they lose and Bolton do not beat Peterborough.

Paul Warne’s team could also secure promotion with a loss if Bolton defeat Peterborough but do not overcome the four-goal difference.

Any other outcome will result in Bolton winning promotion instead.

With Peterborough already guaranteed a top-six finish, there is a tight competition for the final two play-off spots involving four teams.

Barnsley would secure a play-off spot with a victory over Northampton.

In the event of a draw, Barnsley will secure a play-off spot if two of Lincoln, Oxford, and Blackpool fail to win.

Lincoln will secure a play-off spot with a win if Oxford lose, draw, and do not reverse the five-goal difference, or if Barnsley fail to win.

Oxford needed to secure a victory against Exeter and rely on either Barnsley or Lincoln failing to win their matches in order to secure a spot in the top six.

But, even a win may not guarantee a top-six finish if both Barnsley and Lincoln emerge victorious and Oxford does not overturn the five-goal difference.

On the other hand, a draw could be sufficient for Des Buckingham’s team, as long as either Barnsley or Lincoln lose and Blackpool do not win against Reading.

For Blackpool to secure a place in the play-offs, only a win will do. This would require at least two of Barnsley, Lincoln, and Oxford to not win their respective matches.

Shifting focus to the relegation battle, three teams are vying for two spots to avoid relegation. Cambridge will face already-relegated Port Vale, where a draw would be enough to secure their safety.

Even in the event of a loss, Cambridge could still avoid relegation if both Burton and Cheltenham fail to win their matches.

Burton would stay up if they got a victory against Fleetwood. Alternatively, as long as the Brewers match or better Cheltenham’s result, they’re safe.

If Cheltenham fail to beat Stevenage, Martin Paterson’s side can afford to draw or lose their game with Fleetwood and stay in the division.

It is win or bust for Cheltenham. They head to Stevenage and need to secure maximum points to have any chance of surviving. They will stay in League One if they win and Burton lose, and will also stay in the third tier if they win by two or more goals and Burton draw.
