The coach’s contract is set to expire at the end of June

Rafa Marquez has been discussing his future at Barcelona as he heads towards the end of his current contract.

The Mexican has done a good job with Barcelona Atletic, securing a play-off place, and was also a candidate to replace Xavi as first-team boss.

That job has now gone to Hansi Flick, with Marquez’s future also in doubt with his contract set to expire.

Here’s what he’s had to say about his current situation at the club:

“I have a good understanding with the board and the people from grassroots football to be able to talk when this is over and I am in no hurry,” he said.

“If my name has come up [to replace Xavi], it has been because of the work I have done. I hope it continues to be like this,”

“I’m very proud of the work the team has done, we have a great opportunity against a very strong team like Ibiza, who wants to recover a place in the Second Division.”

Marquez also spoke about seeing Xavi depart the club and admitted it’s been a tough time for all involved.

“As the friend that he is, it has been difficult and complicated to see what has happened, but in a position like this and in such a big team there are consequences when the results are not good,” he added.

“Xavi has the ability to continue working and continue to evolve to have a new opportunity. As a footballer he was a great professional and as a coach he has also shown it, his time has not been easy and he has achieved important things like the last League and the Super Cup and he still has a lot to give as a coach.”

It remains to be seen if Marquez will stay in his position with Barca Atletic next season or look for a new challenge.
