One player each Premier League club should sell this summer

Premier League clubs are finalising plans for the summer transfer window ahead of its official opening next month.


While much of the focus will be on incomings, top-flight clubs need to sell – and sell well – at a time when the Premier League’s financial rules are headline news. Ensuring balance in the dressing room and on the books is crucial for success and we’ve looked at one player each Premier League side should sell this summer.


Arsenal – Emile Smith Rowe

Emile Smith Rowe has missed far too much football over the last two seasons, totalling just 511 minutes in the Premier League due to fitness and favour issues. Still just 23, the midfielder needs games to rediscover the form that saw him score 10 goals and break into the England set-up in 2021-22. Opportunities look unlikely to arrive at Arsenal, with Smith Rowe having fallen down the pecking order.




Aston Villa – Philippe Coutinho

A brief burst of brilliance on loan at Aston Villa saw Philippe Coutinho threaten to revive his faltering fortunes in the Midlands. Villa signed the Brazilian permanently for £17m in 2022, but he failed to make an impact and spent last season on loan at Qatari outfit Al-Duhail. One of the big earners at Villa Park, so removing him from the wage bill should be a priority.

Bournemouth – Kieffer Moore

Moore’s stock is on the up after helping Ipswich to promotion last season, with the forward having scored seven goals in 18 games after joining The Tractor Boys on loan in January. The Wales international will turn 32 in August and now appears the right time to sell, after Bournemouth completed the permanent signing of Enes Unal from Getafe. He could be an astute addition for any Championship promotion hopeful.


Brentford – Ivan Toney

This summer represents the last chance for Brentford to cash in on Ivan Toney, who has entered the final 12 months of his contract and has expressed clear desire for a new challenge. Having continually talked up leaving Brentford, selling the striker makes sense as Thomas Frank looks to re-mould his side. The West Londoners have already agreed a deal to bring in Igor Thiago from Club Brugge as his replacement.




Brighton – Mahmoud Dahoud

A free transfer arrival from Borussia Dortmund, Dahoud appeared a coup. It didn’t work out as hoped with the midfielder returning to the Bundesliga on loan in January. A sale seems likely and should earn the Seagulls a profit.


Chelsea – Armando Broja

Broja’s development has stalled at Chelsea and a loan move to Fulham failed to revive his fortunes. The 22-year-old has real potential, though it looks unlikely to be fulfilled at Chelsea, where a bloated squad has hindered his chances of regular football.


Given his homegrown status, he could earn Chelsea a nice profit as the Blues look to remain compliant with the Premier League’s financial rules.


Crystal Palace – Odsonne Edouard

Has Odsonne Edouard reached the end of the road at Crystal Palace? Jean-Philippe Mateta’s goal glut has cemented his place as Palace’s number nine, leaving Edouard with a decision to make on his future.


The Eagles might feel that Edouard can undergo a similar arc, having produced better goalscoring numbers than Mateta in his career to date, but the Frenchman has failed to eclipse seven Premier League goals in any of his three seasons at Selhurst Park.


Everton – Amadou Onana

Everton need to make sales this summer amid the club’s uncertain ownership situation, with Amadou Onana a player likely to receive interest. The Belgian’s potential is clear, though he was dropped from the side during the run-in and appears more disposable than either Jordan Pickford or Jarrad Branthwaite.


If Everton can bring in a fee of £50m+ plus for the 22-year-old, it could make sense for all parties. Dominic Calvert-Lewin is another who could move on. His contract situation needs to be addressed, with the forward’s deal set to expire in 2025.

Fulham – Carlos Vinicius

Brought in as a backup to Aleksandar Mitrovic, Vinicius flattered to deceive with seven goals in 41 league appearances for Fulham. He joined Galatasaray on loan for 2023-24 but has barely featured as the Istanbul outfit won the Turkish title.


Ipswich Town – Marcus Harness

Ipswich’s rapid rise through the leagues means exits are likely this summer, following back-to-back promotions. Marcus Harness has been a useful addition since arriving from Portsmouth in 2022 but made just seven league starts last season.


Liverpool – Caoimhin Kelleher

Too good to be playing second-fiddle to Alisson for any longer, Caoimhin Kelleher’s performances across 26 appearances for Liverpool this season suggest he is ready for number-one status. Dislodging Alisson looks unlikely, and a transfer is expected for the Ireland international.


The Reds could command a significant fee for the 25-year-old, adding to the coffers for new head coach Arne Slot.




Leicester – Patson Daka

Leicester’s forward line needs overhauling following Premier League promotion, with Kelechi Iheanacho expected to move on and Jamie Vardy now 37.


Patson Daka has failed to flourish since joining the Foxes from Red Bull Salzburg and scored a modest seven goals during their promotion-winning campaign. Some glaring misses and an xG underperformance of (-3.09) suggest better quality is required in the Premier League.


Manchester City – Kalvin Phillips

Kalvin Phillips’ move to Manchester City has been nothing short of a disaster. He started just two league games in 18 months, struggled badly on loan at West Ham last season, and has lost his place in the England squad.


Phillips has not become a bad player overnight but a new environment is needed to restore his crippled confidence. Everton have been linked with providing one.




Manchester United – Antony

Is Anthony the worst signing in Premier League history? He’s in the conversation. Manchester United spent £87m on the winger, who has just ended his second season with the club with one goal and one assist from 29 league appearances.


Predictable in his play and ineffective, his shameless celebrations in United’s FA Cup semi-final win over Coventry also saw his attitude again questioned, an embarrassing taunt towards the second-tier side after shootout success at Wembley.

Newcastle – Miguel Almiron

It all came together for Miguel Almiron last season. The Paraguayan’s purple patch helped Newcastle to Champions League qualification, with 11 goals in 34 appearances.


However, his purple patch has proven to be just that, after a downturn around goal in 2023-24. Excluding last season, Almiron has scored just 12 goals in 143 appearances for the Magpies. With Saudi sides circling, expect the 30-year-old to move on.


Nottingham Forest – Odysseas Vlachodimos

Nottingham Forest seem to sign at least one new goalkeeper each transfer window. Forest have failed to find the solution in goal with Odysseas Vlachodimos one of several underwhelming options. The Greece international arrived from Benfica last summer for a fee of around £8m but made just five Premier League appearances.


Southampton – Paul Onuachu

Part of the exodus following relegation last summer, Onuachu had been signed from Genk with the hope of keeping Southampton in the Premier League six months earlier. He failed to score in 11 appearances but has rebuilt his reputation on loan at Trabzonspor.


The 6ft 7in has scored 15 goals in 21 appearances for the Turkish side and should attract offers.




Tottenham – Tanguy Ndombele

It’s easy to forget that Tanguy Ndombele is still a Tottenham player. Signed from Lyon for a club-record fee in 2019, the midfielder frustrated fans and managers alike, before embarking on a series of unsuccessful loan moves.


He’s spent the 2023-24 campaign at Galatasaray but has been handed just four league starts as the Turkish side won 102 points en route to the Süper Lig title.


Spurs might struggle to find a buyer for a player on a reported £120,000-a-week in North London.


West Ham – Danny Ings

West Ham’s search for a striker will continue this summer with the ageing Michail Antonio and Danny Ings failing to impress. The latter was signed as a ‘Premier League proven’ option in January 2023 but has scored just three times in 37 league appearances during a tough time in East London.


Newly-promoted Southampton are said to be considering the 31-year-old, who netted 41 goals in 91 too-flight appearances for the Saints between 2018 and 2021.

Wolves – Fabio Silva

Wolves spent a club-record £35m to sign Fabio Silva in 2020. Just 18 years old at the time, Silva’s emergence at FC Porto saw Wolves spend big to sign the talented teenager, but it has proven to be a major mistake.


The Portuguese forward has scored four goals in 62 league appearances for Wolves, spending the last three seasons on loan at Anderlecht, PSV and Rangers to mixed success. He’s struggled in Scotland this season, hardly an ideal audition for a regular role at Molineux.
