Sussex Police launch a murder probe after a 57 year old man gets ‘beaten to death’ inside a pub hours after the Denmark v England match.


Police have launched a murder investigation in Chichester after police cordoned off part of the city centre (June 20).


A large police presence was seen in West Street, Chichester, last night following the incident which occurred at about 11pm with officers cordoning off part of the city centre last night (June 20).


Officials investigating the horror attack believe a 57-year-old man from South Yorkshire was the victim of football violence after he suffered fatal injuries at the pub in West Sussex. He was assaulted fewer than three hours after the disappointing Euro 2024 game, with Sussex Police stating he was targeted by three men.


They launched the attack inside the The Dolphin and Anchor Wetherspoon, with emergency services arriving after the incident to provide CPR on the street outside. Despite their best efforts, paramedics were unable to save the man, and he was pronounced dead at the scene. His next of kin have since been informed.


Police have since arrested two men, 30-year-old man from Birmingham on suspicion of murder, and a 42-year-old man from County Durham on suspicion of affray. Both remain in police custody. Investigators have also identified a third man suspected of affray, but he “remains outstanding” and officers are working to find him.










SUSSEX POLICE STATEMENT

A murder investigation has been launched following an assault at a pub in Chichester.

Officers responded to the incident at The Dolphin and Anchor, in West Street, about 11pm on Thursday 20 June.

A 57-year-old man from South Yorkshire sustained serious head injuries. Despite the best efforts of police and paramedics who commenced CPR, he was sadly pronounced deceased at the scene.

His next of kin have been informed and will be supported by specialist officers.

A 30-year-old man from Birmingham was arrested on suspicion of murder and a 42-year-old man from County Durham was arrested on suspicion of affray. Both remain in police custody.

A third man suspected of affray has been identified but remains outstanding, and efforts to locate him are ongoing.

A section of the city centre has been cordoned off and the public can expect to see an increased police presence in the area as enquiries continue.

Detective Chief Inspector Suzanne Joseph, of the Surrey and Sussex Major Crime Team, said: “This incident led to the tragic death of a 57-year-old man, and our thoughts are with his family and friends at this difficult time.

“It happened in a busy pub in the city centre, and we’re urging anyone with information to come forward as we seek to establish the exact circumstances.

Chichester Cathedral tweeted: “It is with deep shock and sadness that we have learnt of the incident on West Street, which took place yesterday. Our prayers are with those involved, including the family and friends of the 57 year-old man who has tragically lost his life.


“Tomorrow (6.00 – 7.00pm, 22nd June) residents and visitors of #Chichester are invited to come together in the Cathedral for a period of prayer, reflection and to light a candle following the news of the tragic incident in which a 57-year-old man sadly lost his life in the city-centre.”
