Liverpool vs Bournemouth: Match Preview | Premier League 2024/25

Liverpool will be looking to bounce back from a shocking home defeat to Nottingham Forest as they hosts Andoni Iraola’s Bournemouth at Anfield.

The Reds have now won three out of four Premier League games under new manager Arne Slot. Prior to the defeat to Nottingham Forest, they had won three consecutive Premier League games without conceding while scoring 2+ goals in each fixture. A 3-1 away win to Milan at the Champions League would be a confidence booster, with two set-piece goals from Ibrahima Konate & Virgil Van Dijk and a beautiful finish from Szobozlai.

AFC Bournemouth, on the other hand, have had an inconsistent start to the season with two draws, one win and one loss. Their last Premier League outing was a 1-0 loss at home to Chelsea. They have been porous defensively, and are yet to keep a clean sheet in the Premier League this season. Bournemouth failed to take their chances in their last Premier League game against Chelsea, having underperformed their xG with zero goals from 1.78 xG including a missed penalty.

First-choice keeper, Alison, is an injury doubt after picking up a muscle injury during midweek Champions League action with second-choice keeper Caoimhin Kelleher likely to fill in for the Brazilian shot-stopper. Harvey Elliot remains sidelined with a long term injury with the rest of the squad fully available for selection.

Dango Ouattara will have a late fitness test for Bournemouth with the exciting winger sidelined after picking up an ankle injury while on international duty. Tyler Adams remains unavailable for selection. Everyone else is available for squad selection.

Arne Slot has retained some of Liverpool’s tactical identity under Jurgen Klopp. Liverpool play a high line with the full backs aggressive in and out of possession. However, Liverpool have become more comfortable in the first phase of build up, choosing to bait the opposition press and attack the space behind the opposition’s last line of defense with the pace of Salah & Diaz in wide areas.

Bournemouth are a well coached pressing team, choosing to attack the opposition first phase of buildup with well coordinated pressing schemes conducted by the forward line. They’ve also shown quality in playing out from the back, breaking opposition lines through short and intricate passes.

Liverpool vs Bournemouth – Key Players

Ryan Gravenberch

Gravenberch have had an impressive start to the season playing as defensive midfielder responsible for dictating play and controlling tempo. His ability to resist intensive moments of opposition press will be key as Bournemouth’s forward line will likely seek to deny him quality space and time. If executed successfully by Gravenberch, Liverpool could consistently find themselves through on goal.

Antoine Semenyo

The Bournemouth wide forwards could be key in deciding the outcome of the game. Iraola’s forward line are responsible for responding to pressing triggers, dictating the tempo of the press and defending from the front. In Liverpool’s moments of sustained possession, they’ll need to be patient to avoid being picked apart by Liverpool.

On the attacking side, Liverpool are prone to conceding quality chances in transition, Semenyo’s ability to quickly turn defense into attack will be crucial while being tasked with converting rare chances into goals as quality chances would be difficult to generate consistently.
